Stress and psychosomatic contributions to illness are given rather short attention in the traditional medical model. Many physicians don’t want to admit that 85% or more of all illness is psychosomatic, as I was taught in medical school; they tend to consider such patients “crocks.” In the last few years, however, psychoneuroimmunology is increasingly demonstrating, from a very scientific point of view, that mood is perhaps the most critical factor in maintaining the integrity of the body, especially of the immune system. Depression essentially clobbers the ability of the immune system to be healthy. On the other hand, positive thinking and a cheerful outlook can go a long way toward helping us become, and remain, healthy. THINK RIGHT to BE RIGHT. (Norm Shealy)
